Where Harris and Trump will spend election night
Vice President Harris and former President Trump spent the final days of the 2024 campaign criss-crossing crucial battleground states with packed schedules of massive rallies.
For election night, each has opted to stick a little closer to home to wait for the results.
Trump will be spending the evening at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., and Harris will be at her college alma mater Howard University in Washington, D.C.
President Biden, who ended his campaign for reelection in July, will watch election results from the White House residence with first lady Jill Biden, long time aides and senior White House staff, an administration official told The Hill.
Harris earned her Bachelor's degree from Howard in 1986. If elected, she would become the first HBCU graduate to become the nation's president. Expect to see big turnout from the "Divine Nine," especially the four sororities that helped mobilize support for Harris, who is an Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Harris discussed the significance of choosing to spend election night at Howard during a Tuesday appearance on "The Big Tigger Morning Show."
"The first office I ever ran for was freshman class representative at Howard University," she said. "To go back tonight to Howard University, my beloved alma mater, and be able to hopefully recognize this day for what it is, is really full-circle for me."
Her event will take place on The Yard, a historically and culturally significant site at the center of campus. The Yard has been secured for the event to limit access, in the first known presidential candidate election night event to take place on a college campus.
Trump, meanwhile, will be miles away from D.C., at the resort he affectionately dubbed the "Winter White House," while he was in office. He formally announced his third presidential campaign from the estate's ballroom in 2022.
Trump hosted a lengthy roster of foreign dignitaries to the massive waterside mansion. It also has a private members club, event space and hotel. Trump formally moved his primary residence to Mar-a-Lago after decamping New York City, from which he had built his name and business empire, while he was president.
The lifelong New Yorker explained his decision to pack up for Florida in a post on Twitter, citing taxes and his strained relationships with state and local leaders.
"I hated having to make his decision, but in the end it will be best for all concerned," he wrote on the platform now known as X.
