Washington Post restructuring newsroom; columnist resigns

The Washington Post is planning a major overhaul of the outlet's newsroom as part of a new direction the company is headed under billionaire owner Jeff Bezos.
Executive Editor Matt Murray wrote to staff on Monday in a memo that the Post will split into two main desks: the first focusing on politics and government and another known as the "national desk."
The politics and government desk "will encompass most of our reporters and editors covering the political scene and the government, which remain a central pillar for The Post," Murray wrote, while the national desk "incorporates the America team, the education team, and the GA desk in Washington, will have a remit to cover the United States and important issues and figures outside of Washington and across the country more broadly."
Axios first reported the memo.
The changes were announced the same day that longtime Post columnist Ruth Marcus resigned after the newspaper reportedly declined to publish an editorial she had written criticizing Bezos' recent directive that the newspaper's Op-Ed section focus solely on free markets and personal liberties.
"It is a time of change across The Post, including for our colleagues in the company and in Opinion," Murray wrote in his note on Monday. "This is a big effort involving all of us, and it is disruptive. There will be some confusion and even some mistakes. Candidly, I realize it may not be for everyone."
The Post in a statement to The Hill on Monday said it was "grateful for Ruth’s significant contributions to The Washington Post over the past 40 years. We respect her decision to leave and wish her the best.”
Marcus' resignation came just days after David Shipley, the newspaper's top opinion editor, quit over Bezos' orders on how the Post opinion section would operate.
Bezos and Post publisher Will Lewis have sparked a wave of criticism, staff resignations and canceled subscriptions in recent months with changes to the Post's editorial direction and a decision not to endorse a candidate in last November's presidential election.
