UnitedHealthcare selects new CEO
UnitedHealthcare announced it has a new CEO earlier this week, almost two months after former CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan.
The health insurance giant’s new CEO is longtime company employee Tim Noel.
Noel joined UnitedHealth Group in 2007 serving in a financial and operations role, according to the company’s website.
He also worked on restructuring at Northwest Airlines during its bankruptcy proceedings.
Noel brings “unparalleled experience” to the role and a track record of “improving how health care works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments and our partners,” a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson told The Hill via email.
Thompson was killed in a targeted attack while on his way to an investor conference in Midtown Manhattan. He was appointed chief executive officer of the company in 2021.
Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Maryland native, was charged with the killing of Thompson. He faces 11 counts in New York state, including one for first-degree murder and one of murder in the second-degree as an act of terrorism, according to an indictment.
He pleaded not guilty to those charges during an arraignment in December.
Thompson's killing unleashed a stream of criticisms online against health insurance providers, as some even offered praise for Mangione.
