Trump urges voters to oust Republican who voted to impeach him
Former President Trump on Tuesday urged voters to oust Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the former president after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
In a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump cited Newhouse’s impeachment vote as reason to vote against him, saying, his challenger, Republican Jerrod Sessler, “is running against a Weak and Pathetic RINO named Newhouse, who voted to, for no reason, Impeach me.”
“Newhouse has to go! He wished he didn’t do what he did, but it’s too late, and besides that, he didn’t represent the people nearly as well as Jerrod will,” Trump continued in the post.
“Jerrod will do an incredible job - He is MAGA all the way, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement. JERROD SESSLER WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!”
The race has divided top political figures in the party: While Trump pushes his supporters to vote against the incumbent, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have flown to Washington to stump for their colleague.
Newhouse is one of only two remaining House Republicans in Congress who broke with their party following the Capitol attack and voted to impeach Trump.
Trump previously endorsed Sessler in the race for the House seat in Washington, where the top two primary candidates — even if they’re from the same party — advance to the general election in November.
Newhouse, who defeated a Democratic challenger in 2022 by a wide margin, came in second in the 2024 primary, while Sessler came in first.
The Hill has reached out to Newhouse’s campaign for comment.
