Trump says he could lose: 'Bad things could happen'
Former President Trump told ABC News on Sunday that he could imagine losing the presidential election to Vice President Harris.
ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl talked to the former president by phone Sunday morning and asked whether he thinks there’s any way he could lose the election.
"Yeah, I guess, you know," Trump said in response.
"I guess you could lose, can lose. I mean, that happens, right?" he said. "But I think I have a pretty substantial lead. But, you could say — yeah, yeah, you could lose. Bad things could happen. You know, things happen, but it's going to be interesting."
Polls show the race between Trump and Harris may be the closest in American history. The two are separated by no more than a couple of percentage points in the seven key swing states that will decide the contest.
Neither campaign appears to have a substantial lead, despite Trump's comments.
At the same time, if the polls are all off by a couple percentage points one way or the other, either Harris or Trump could earn a decisive victory.
Trump said he thinks the country will know the winner by Tuesday night. Asked when he thinks he will address the country on Election Day, Trump told Karl, “I’ll be out there at the right time.”
In the latest Decision Desk HQ/The Hill national polling average, the two major candidates are tied, each getting 48.3 percent of the vote.
Trump at times has sought to suggest the only way he could lose the election is through some kind of fraud or malfeasance, something he could be alluding to with the "bad things could happen" remark.
The Harris campaign has said it is prepared for Trump to prematurely declare victory as a signal to his supporters.
