Trump rages after Smith report release: 'Lamebrain prosecutor'
President-elect Trump hammered Special Counsel Jack Smith following the prosecutor’s public release of his final report in the election subversion case, calling him a “lamebrain prosecutor.”
“Deranged Jack Smith was unable to successfully prosecute the Political Opponent of his 'boss,' Crooked Joe Biden, so he ends up writing yet another ‘Report’ based on information that the Unselect Committee of Political Hacks and Thugs ILLEGALLY DESTROYED AND DELETED, because it showed how totally innocent I was, and how completely guilty Nancy Pelosi, and others, were,” Trump said in a Truth Social post in early Tuesday morning.
“Jack is a lamebrain prosecutor who was unable to get his case tried before the Election, which I won in a landslide. THE VOTERS HAVE SPOKEN,” he added.
Smith's full report about the investigation into Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election was released publicly shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
He also sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, claiming that the decision to bring charges against Trump was his own and that nobody at the Department of Justice (DOJ) or within the Biden administration influenced his decisions along the way.
“To all who know me well, the claim from Mr. Trump that my decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors is, in a word, laughable,” Smith wrote in the letter to Garland.
Trump and his co-defendents have filed a flurry of motions in recent weeks seeking to block the report's release. Those efforts were successful in a separate classified documents case, also prosecuted by Smith, being heard in Florida.
Smith, who formally resigned on Friday, wrote in the 174-page volume that he could have secured a conviction against Trump in the Jan. 6 case on charges related to obstructing the peaceful transfer of power.
“The throughline of all of Mr. Trump’s criminal efforts was deceit-knowingly false claims of election fraud-and the evidence shows that Mr. Trump used these lies as a weapon to defeat a federal government function foundational to the United States’ democratic process,” Smith wrote in the report.
Trump said the timing of the report's release showed "how desperate Deranged Jack Smith is," in another Tuesday Truth Social post.
U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, denied an eleventh-hour bid from Trump to block Smith's report about two hours before its release.
