Trump mourns Home Depot founder, GOP donor Bernie Marcus: 'An extraordinary man'
Former President Trump on Tuesday mourned “legendary entrepreneur and political genius” Bernie Marcus, the Home Depot founder and prominent Republican mega-donor who died Monday at the age of 95.
“He was my supporter from the beginning and was always there when I needed help or advice. He strongly endorsed me for this election, as well as my other runs, and I will never forget him for that,” Trump posted on his social media site Truth Social.
Marcus had become an outspoken supporter and financial backer of Trump, maxing out donations to his campaign this election and donating $1 million to the pro-Trump super PAC Make America Great Inc. last November.
He also penned an op-ed for Real Clear Politics this spring urging the GOP to unite behind Trump, whom he called “one of the most misunderstood men in America,” and other conservative donors to open their wallets to help him win.
Trump called Marcus “an extraordinary man” whom he looked forward to “powerfully honoring.”
Marcus was a prominent financial supporter of Republican candidates and causes for more than 40 years. He donated nearly $15.1 million to federal candidates and super PACs during the 2022 election cycle and more than $24.7 million during the 2020 election, according to OpenSecrets.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) also mourned the loss of his “good friend.”
“Countless lives improved and saved are an enduring testament to Bernie Marcus’ generosity,” McConnell said in a statement.
