Trump jokes about McConnell endorsement: ‘Boy that must have been a painful day’
Former President Trump joked about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) endorsement, noting it “must have been a painful day in his life” because the two have been at odds for years.
Trump was speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Sunday, when he mentioned McConnell after remarks about the inflation seen under President Biden and Vice President Harris’s administration.
“They caused inflation. They screwed up my energy policy and the prices went way up and everything else, real simple. In addition to that, they way overspent. They got trillions and trillions of dollars,” Trump said, highlighted by Mediaite.
“Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell pretty soon because he helped that guy. Can you believe he endorsed me? Boy, that must have been a painful day in his life,” he continued.
McConnell endorsed Trump in March, but their relationship remains icy.
The minority leader reportedly doesn’t talk to Trump, even though most of the Senate GOP conference came around to the idea of supporting his presidential campaign.
A new biography of the senator found McConnell privately slammed Trump as “stupid,” “ill-tempered” and a “despicable human being” after the 2020 election.
McConnell made the comments before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and the two publicly split when the senator recognized Biden as the official winner of the election and has later painted him as a good guy.
Asked about his previous comments, McConnell said last month that his remarks pale in comparison to what other Trump allies have said about the former president, but it didn’t matter because “we are all on the same team now.”
Still, it appears Trump is holding a grudge. In his rally Sunday, he slammed McConnell and said the Kentucky Republican “didn’t have to” endorse him.
“What a disgrace,” he said.
