Trump: Inauguration prayer service was ‘not too exciting’

President Trump said Tuesday the prayer service for his inauguration, when the reverend called on him to have mercy on transgender children and immigrant families, wasn’t too exciting.

Reporters asked the president when he returned to the White House after the service what he thought of it, and he responded, “What do you think? Did you like it? Did you find it exciting?”

“Not too exciting, was it? I didn't think it was a good service, no. Thank you very much. They can do, they can do much better,” he added.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde made a plea to Trump, who was sitting in the first pew at the National Cathedral during the service, to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared.”

“There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families — some who fear for their lives,” she said.

Budde also called on Trump to recognize that not all immigrants are criminals and to aid people fleeing war zones and persecution.

“The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals — they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she said.

The sermon comes the morning after Trump signed a flurry of executive orders, including one recognizing only two sexes — male and female — and another restricting immigration to carry out his campaign promise to target migrants, especially those who have committed crimes in the U.S.
