Trump flies flag at full height before end of Carter mourning period
American flags at President-elect Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida were flying at full-staff Monday, The Associated Press reported.
The shift comes before the end of the 30-day mourning period intended to honor the late President Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100.
President Biden ordered flags nationally to half-staff through sunset on Jan. 28. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) issued a similar 30-day directive for his state.
The AP reported a large flag at Mar-a-Lago had initially been lowered to half-staff but has since been raised.
The Hill has reached out to Trump’s team for comment.
Trump has expressed frustration that flags would be set to half-staff during his inauguration, which falls within 30 days of Carter’s death.
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”
“Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out,” Trump said, referring to the flags being lowered during his inauguration.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Monday ordered the state’s flags be raised to full-staff on Inauguration Day, as Trump enters his second term in office.
“While we honor the service of a former President,” Abbott said in a statement, “we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America.”
Trump visited Carter as he lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda last week and attended his state funeral service.
Trump, in a statement after Carter’s death, said he “strongly disagreed” with Carter “philosophically and politically,” but recognized that the 39th president “truly loved and respected our Country and all it stands for.”
