Trump beats Harris in Texas, keeping state red
Former President Trump is projected to win Texas, netting him 40 electoral votes, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Trump was widely expected to win the Lone Star State, which he won by 6 points in 2020 and by 9 points in 2016.
One wild card this cycle was the down-ballot race between Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and Democrat Colin Allred, which drew outsized attention in the closing weeks of the campaign as polls showed an increasingly tight contest.
Democrats hoped the enthusiasm around the Senate race could lift the party's boat in the presidential contest. Vice President Harris held a high-profile rally in Houston last month that featured an appearance by Beyoncé.
But that energy wasn't enough to translate into a win for Democrats, who have tried and failed over the course of several cycles to make inroads in the country's second most populated state.
