Trump ambassador pick: United Nations 'a deep den of antisemitism'

Rep. Elise Stefanik, the New York Republican whom President Trump has nominated to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, blasted the international group as a "deep den of antisemitism" that is infected with "hate and moral rot," during a speech at an Anti-Defamation League summit in New York City on Monday.
"We know the United Nations is indeed a deep den of antisemitism — infected with the same rampant anti-Israel and anti-American hate and moral rot that has polluted America's higher education system," Stefanik said. "Especially since the barbaric Hamas attacks of October 7, the UN has continuously betrayed Israel, betraying America in the process, acting instead as an apologist for Iran and Iran's terrorist proxies."
Stefanik, who chaired the House Republican Conference until January, is awaiting Senate confirmation to the U.N. post. The vote on her appointment, which is expected to easily pass the Republican-held upper chamber, has been put on ice because of the GOP's razor-thin majority in the House. Some Republicans see Stefanik's reliably Trump-aligned vote as crucial to fast-tracking the president’s agenda.
Career diplomat Dorothy Shea is temporarily holding the title of chargé d'affaires to the U.N. until a permanent appointee is confirmed.
Stefanik, who chaired the House Republican Conference from 2021 to January, has been a vocal critic of antisemitism amid the ongoing war in Gaza, particularly on university campuses.
She drew some jeers during her ADL address when she appeared to blame the Biden administration for Hamas' deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
"I believe it’s quite obvious to the world that if President Trump had remained in office, October 7th would never have happened,” she said to audible boos from the crowd. “He has brought his pro-Israel policies to the White House."
Stefanik's comments come after the U.S. voted against a resolution that condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine three years ago. The U.S. unsuccessfully sought a modified resolution calling for an end to the conflict without blaming Russia. The vote against the final resolution put the U.S. in the company of Russia, China, Israel and 14 other countries.
Stefanik touted the Trump administration's ongoing support of Israel and said the White House is working to "redirect the course of history away from the antisemitism and the anti-Israel bias."
"Let me be clear, everyday Americans understand the need to support Israel's fight, and that the same pro-Hamas terror sympathizers who chant 'Death to Israel' also chant 'Death to America," she said. "These terrorists want to topple Israel, topple the US, and we must never yield."
