Top House Democratic super PAC targeting Republicans over proposed Medicaid cuts

A top House Democratic super PAC is targeting Republicans over their proposed cuts to Medicaid.

In a release Tuesday, House Majority PAC said lower chamber Republicans have gone “full Matt Bevin” and are planning to make cuts to Medicaid to fund Elon Musk “and other billionaires” through tax breaks.

Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) lost in 2019 to now-Gov. Andy Beshear (D). Bevin pushed for Medicaid work requirements and ending Medicaid expansion without the work requirements.

House Republicans looking to offset the cost of legislation to move President Trump's agenda are considering Medicaid cuts as one of their main ways to pay for their bill, which is expected to include an extension of Trump's tax cuts from 2017 as well as additional costly tax breaks, including ending taxes on tips.

GOP members see Medicaid as a program with fraud and abuse and have consistently aimed to cut its spending.

A resolution cleared the House Budget Committee, and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) aims to push it through the chamber. Still, some Republican lawmakers are questioning what exactly would be cut and the impacts of slashing the program in their districts.

House Majority PAC intends to flip the House in the 2026 midterm elections and said it believes Medicaid cuts will be a “defining issue” in the campaigns.

“Medicaid provides essential, life-saving care for over 72 million Americans, including nearly half of all children in the United States,” the super PAC said.

The organization said it plans to hold House Republicans accountable for “abandoning” constituents in the interest of America’s most wealthy people and corporations.

In its release, the organization included a breakdown of Medicaid enrollees in battleground districts. It noted that in Rep. Monica De La Cruz’s (R) district in Texas, 78 percent of children were on Medicaid.

While the super PAC looks to target Republicans over the issue, the Medicaid cuts are just a proposal for now. No specific cuts have been proposed and the idea of targeting Medicaid has caused moderates or swing district lawmakers to become nervous.

Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have sought to reassure those lawmakers, downplaying the possibility of major cuts.
