Texas lt. governor pushes to rebrand New York strip steak

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) wants to reclaim one of America's most popular cuts of beef to acknowledge the Lone Star State's cattlemen: New York strip, meet the Texas strip.
"Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers," Patrick said in a statement on X touting a state resolution that would make the name change official in Texas. "We promote the Texas brand on everything made or grown in Texas because it benefits our economy and jobs."
Patrick, a Baltimore native who is running for a fourth term in Texas next year, said he ran the idea by Texas cattle feeders and raisers last week to beef up his plan.
"I asked why we didn’t call it a 'Texas Strip' because New York has mostly dairy cows," he said. "Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn’t mean we need to keep doing that."
The strip steak already goes by multiple names that vary geographically. The North American Meat Processors Association's "Meat Buyers Guide" notes that different regions refer to the strip loin steak as "Kansas City" or "New York."
But Patrick said he's hoping that with enough promotion the "Texas strip" moniker will take over.
"We ask restaurants to change the name of this strip of meat the next time they reprint their menus, and grocery stores to do the same," he said. "We want this to catch on across the country and around the globe."
"In a world filled with serious issues that we address every day at the Texas Capitol, this simple resolution will help better market Texas beef," he added.
New Yorkers don't seem to be buying it, though. The New York Times surveyed some of the city's restaurateurs who scoffed at the idea.
“I guess the lieutenant governor is looking for some P.R., but a New York steak is a New York steak,” one told The Times.
