Sunday shows preview: Government shutdown looms, election intensifies post-debate
A government shutdown is looming as Congress attempts to agree on a funding strategy by the end of the month. The countdown to Election Day is on and the race has intensified after this week’s presidential debate. Both topics will likely be discussed in this week’s Sunday talk shows.
House Republicans have been unable to coalesce around Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) strategy, which would have extended funding for six months. He later pulled the scheduled vote on that legislation since he faced opposition from his party.
Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) is set to join NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.” Gonzales recently criticized his party and said the GOP is on track to lose the House in the upcoming election.
He criticized the far-right and argued that both parties are not delivering for the American people. Instead, they are talking “all about who we’re going to impeach.”
Some Senate Republicans are warning against House GOP members’ efforts to have a standoff over the government shutdown.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is set to join “Fox News Sunday,” where he may weigh in on the looming deadline.
Former President Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) will join several shows this week, as the campaign attempts to build momentum after the debate, where Vice President Harris was widely viewed as the winner.
Vance and Trump have come under sharp criticism after the Ohio Senator amplified a false claim that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating people’s pets. Trump reiterated the claim during the debate and the city has dealt with the fallout this week, including bomb threats at city hall and school evacuations.
Vance may be questioned on his remarks and the campaign’s final push to November. He will appear on CNN’s “State of the Union,” CBS’ “Face the Nation” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) will join ABC’s “This Week,” where he will likely discuss the increased support he sent to Springfield after the city experienced issues following Trump and Vance’s remarks. DeWine said earlier this week the internet is “quite crazy sometimes” and the migrant population in Springfield works “very, very hard.”
After the debate, Harris continued her campaign stops in battleground states. She attended two rallies in North Carolina, a state recently moved to a toss-up.
Her allies are continuing to amplify her message. Gov. Wes Moore (D-Md.) is set to appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.) will make appearances on CNN’s “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday.”
Here’s the full list of appearances on this week’s Sunday talk shows:
NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday” — Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas).
ABC’s “This Week” — Govs. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) and Maura Healey (D-Mass.).

CBS’ “Face the Nation” — Vance; Gov. Wes Moore (D-Md.); Gary Cohn, former director of the U.S. National Economic Council.
CNN’s “State of the Union” — Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.); Vance.
“Fox News Sunday” — Shapiro; Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).
Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” — Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.); Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.).
