Southwest plane, jet have near-miss at Chicago
A Southwest plane and a private jet had a near-miss moment at Chicago’s Midway International Airport on Tuesday.
According to video posted online from Airport Webcams, a Southwest flight flying from Omaha to Chicago nearly collided with a taxiing business jet.
“The crew of Southwest Airlines Flight 2504 initiated a go-around when a business jet entered the runway without authorization at Chicago Midway Airport,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.
The FAA said it is investigating the incident.
In video shared online, it appears the Southwest flight is about to touchdown on a runway at Midway before it begins to rise upward as a passenger jet drives in front of it.
“The crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident,” Southwest said in a statement. “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.”
In a statement, Flexjet, the registered owner of the private jet, said it was aware of the incident.
"Flexjet adheres to the highest safety standards and we are conducting a thorough investigation," a Flexjet spokesperson said in a statement. "Any action to rectify and ensure the highest safety standards will be taken."
According to a recording of the air traffic controllers, the business jet was told to cross Runway 31L and hold short of Runway 31C. The Southwest flight was then told to climb to 3,000 feet elevation.
Once in the air, the Southwest pilot asked how that situation happened.
It’s the latest in a string of aviation incidents that have occurred over the last few weeks. On Monday, two Delta Air Lines flights experienced smokiness, with one returning to the Atlanta airport and another declaring emergency before landing in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The year has kicked off with many plane-related issues, including the American Airlines crash that left nearly 70 dead near Washington, D.C., and the Delta flight that flipped upside down on a Toronto runway and injured several passengers.
