Republican says he's nominating Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said on Monday he is nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Today I will nominate @realDonaldTrump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Issa wrote in a post on X. “No one deserves it more.”
Issa did not specify in his post why he was nominating the president.
In a subsequent statement, however, Issa’s spokesperson pointed to Trump’s peace efforts in the Middle East.
“Congressman Issa recently led a Codel [Congressional delegation] to four Middle East nations – he observed first-hand and from several heads of state that the spirit of peace and moving away from conflict is real and multilateral,” Jonathan Wilcox, Issa’s deputy chief of staff and communications director, said in a statement to The Hill.
“From the time of his election and after being sworn in, President Trump has inspired and promoted the cause of peace – and in a way we have not heard in many years,” Wilcox continued.
“His advocacy is an aspiration of a world without war, and we are seeing this come into focus in several regions of the world today – not just one,” he added.
The announcement comes as Trump has reset U.S. policy around the Ukraine war, ramping up pressure on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky while thawing relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times in the past but has never won the coveted prize.
Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) said in January 2024 that she nominated Trump for his role in brokering the historic Abraham Accords during his first term.
Some observers have speculated that Trump's push for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is, in part, so he could get another chance at the Nobel Peace Prize.
Just this past weekend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Trump’s approach to brokering a deal between Russia and Ukraine, saying, “If this was a Democrat that was doing this, everyone would be saying, ‘Well, he’s on his way to the Nobel Peace Prize.’”
In February 2019, Trump claimed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to reach a peace agreement with North Korea.
