Peter Navarro on Trump rally comedian: 'Biggest, stupidest a‑‑hole'
Former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro blasted comedian Tony Hinchcliffe as the “stupidest a‑‑hole" after he joked that Puerto Rico is “a floating island of garbage” during his speech at former President Trump’s New York City rally Sunday.
“No one worked harder for Puerto Rico after the hurricanes hit than @realDonaldTrump,” Navarro wrote in a post on the social platform X. “@tonyhinchcliffe must be the biggest, stupidest asshole that ever came down the comedy pike. Never loved insult comedians (other than Rickles).”
Hinchcliffe, who goes by Kill Tony, has faced significant backlash from figures across the political spectrum criticizing his material, which he delivered on stage at Madison Square Garden ahead of Trump’s speech Sunday.
The comedian's set included jokes targeting Jews and Black men and a reference to Black Americans carving watermelons for Halloween instead of pumpkins, but it was his comments about Puerto Rico that generated the most attention and scrutiny.
“There’s a lot going on. Like, I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe said at the rally, eliciting mixed reactions from the crowd.
At another point, he said Latinos “love making babies.”
“They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that," the comedian added. "They come inside. Just like they did to our country."
Hinchcliffe has defended himself against the backlash, saying in response to a clip of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), “These people have no sense of humor. Wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his ‘busy schedule’ to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist.”
“I love Puerto Rico and vacation there,” he continued. “I made fun of everyone…watch the whole set. I’m a comedian Tim…might be time to change your tampon.”
Navarro responded to Hinchcliffe’s defense of himself, writing in a separate X post Monday, “June tone deaf dude.”
“The joke itself isn't even funny, and that ultimately why it was double stupid. Oh, and you ‘vacation’ there. Sounds like ‘some of my best friends are’ crap,” Navarro said. “How about admitting it was in poor taste in the stretch run of the most important presidential election in history?”
Navarro — a fierce Trump supporter who served a four-month prison sentence for refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena from House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol — is one of several conservative figures to blast Hinchcliffe’s controversial joke.
The Trump campaign, too, has sought to distance itself from his remarks.
“This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said in a statement.
