Ontario premier hopeful tariff fight will end in days

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he is hopeful the tariff fight between the U.S. and Canada will end within days.
“I hope it stops within the next few days … And I'm not just saying that,” Ford told NewsNation’s Blake Burman on “The Hill” on Tuesday.
“It will be an absolute disaster for both countries, and people will be unemployed, plants will shut down, assembly lines will shut down and inflation's going to happen within days,” he continued later. “So this is unfortunate. One person’s responsible, and that's President Trump.”
On Tuesday, the president imposed 25 percent import tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Trump also threatened to reciprocate if Canada fights back with a retaliatory action.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
On Monday, Ford said he was ready to halt electricity exports to the U.S. if the Trump tariffs went through.
“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford previously said, according to the Toronto Sun.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went after the Trump tariffs aimed at Canada on Tuesday, noting a Wall Street Journal editorial calling them “dumb.”
“Now, I want to speak directly to one specific American,” Trudeau said. “Donald, in the over eight years you and I have worked together, we’ve done big things. We signed a historic deal that has created record jobs and growth in both of our countries.
“We’ve done big things together on the world stage, as Canada and the U.S. have done together for decades, for generations. And now, we should be working together to ensure even greater prosperity for North Americans in a very uncertain and challenging world.”
The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
