Obama: Trump rally speakers used 'most racist, sexist, bigoted stereotypes'
Former President Obama condemned comments made about Puerto Rico during former President Trump's rally on Sunday, labeling the remarks "the most racist, sexist, bigoted stereotypes."
"We saw it last night… The man holds a big rally at Madison Square Garden, and the warm-up speakers were saying the most, were-were trotting out and peddling the most racist, sexist, bigoted stereotypes," Obama said Monday, referencing comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who was a speaker at the rally.
Hinchcliffe had defended his jokes after facing significant backlash.
“These people have no sense of humor,” Hinchcliffe wrote on X after vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized his material. “Wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his ‘busy schedule’ to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist."
“I love Puerto Rico and vacation there,” he continued. “I made fun of everyone…watch the whole set."
The Harris campaign was quick to hit Trump on the crude jokes made during the rally, releasing an ad on Monday tying comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s set to Trump’s treatment of the island.
Obama had added that such remarks show "why this election should not be close."
"Here’s a good rule: if someone does not respect you, if someone does not see you as fellow citizens with equal claims to opportunity, to the pursuit of happiness, to the American Dream, you should not vote for them. You should not expect them to make your life better. They will not help you make the– they will not help you pay the bills," Obama said.
“I mean, we have to reject the kind of politics of division and hatred that we saw represented. America’s ready to turn the page. America’s ready for a better story. Philadelphia, we are ready for a President Kamala Harris," Obama added.
