NYPD reports 17 percent drop in major crimes
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has reported a 17 percent drop in major crimes, the department said in a Tuesday press release.
Compared to the previous January, major crimes in New York City fell 16.8 percent, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The release said murder fell over the year by 24.1 percent, robbery by 26 percent and felony assault by 6.9 percent
“January’s crime declines are an extraordinary testament to the work of our cops,” Tisch said in the release. “Every day, we are analyzing crime numbers and optimizing our deployments to put cops in zones that need them. That’s starting to deliver real results. And New Yorkers can expect more of that data-driven policing to come.”
Major subway system crimes also fell 36.4 percent, the press release said. The announcement of subway crime declining follows the announcing of a safety plan for the subway in March by Gov. Kathy Hocul (D) “to rid our subways of people [who] commit crimes and protect all New Yorkers.”
“So, we’ll be having 750 members of the New York National Guard, as well as another 250 personnel from State and [Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)] Police,” Hochul said during her announcement.
“You’ll start seeing them at the tables, making sure that weapons are not being brought in, working in… concert with our New York State Police, as well as our [New York Police Department (NYPD)], because no one heading to their job, or to visit family or to go to a doctor appointment should worry that the person sitting next to them possesses a deadly weapon,” Hochul continued.
