NYC Mayor Eric Adams attending Trump inauguration
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is set to attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C., on Monday, after Trump said last month that he’d consider pardoning the embattled mayor.
The Trump administration reached out “in the early hours of Monday morning” to invite the mayor, who accepted on behalf of the city, said Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy in a post on the social platform X.
Local outlets reported that this last-minute change meant cancelling plans to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in the Empire State.
“As the mayor has repeatedly said, America has chosen a new national leader and we must work together to build a safer, stronger, and more affordable in New York City,” Levy said.
Adams was indicted in September on criminal charges stemming from a federal corruption investigation. He pleaded not guilty on five counts, including wire fraud, foreign contribution solicitation and bribery — and he insisted he would not resign from office.
“I think that he was treated pretty unfairly,” Trump said of Adams in December, adding that he “would certainly look at it.”
Adams met with Trump last week in Florida, where the mayor said the pair had “a productive conversation” about the needs of New York City, according to a statement from his office. Adams stressed that they did not discuss his legal case.
The president-elect made some inroads in New York during November's election, though the blue stronghold still went easily to Vice President Harris.
Trump’s inauguration is slated for noon on Monday. Once the White House has changed hands, the Republican is expected to sign a barrage of executive orders on issues ranging from immigration to energy.
