Northeast US experiences unseasonably warm temps on Halloween
Record-breaking temperatures are blanketing the Northeast this Halloween, as children ditch the winter gear and enjoy summer weather while trick or treating.
In New York City, the temperature reached a high of 82 degrees in some areas, surpassing the 81-degree record. The historical average temperature is 60.5 degrees. In Buffalo, N.Y., the temperature reached a high of 77, beating the record by 2 degrees.
In Stamford, Conn., the temperature reached 80, surpassing the 78-degree record high for Halloween. In Worcester, Mass., the mercury hit 76, exceeding the record by 3 degrees. And in Portland, Maine, the daytime high reached 76, surpassing the 74-degree record.
“Halloween will be reminiscent of summer in the East, with temperatures 20-30 degrees above normal,” the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) said in a statement.
The WPC warned, however, that a cold front would soon bring an end to the warm weather.
“There have been many record high afternoon temperatures and record high morning temperatures over the past few days across the central to eastern U.S.," read the WPC update.
"The areal extent of record temperatures will, however, decrease significantly over the next few days in the wake of a cold front moving east through the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region Thursday night and into the northeast on Friday,” it continued. “Record high morning lows are still possible Friday morning from the Mid-Atlantic into New England and record afternoon temps are possible Friday from near New York City to northern Maine.”
