Nonpartisan get-out-the-vote push heads to the dancefloor
A new voter registration initiative aims to get voters dancing to the polls with a series of events that attempt to add some boogie to the ballot box experience.
Organizers behind the Purple Tour say their goal is to get out the vote in an engaging and dynamic way, with 50 dance parties planned across 15 states.
Daybreaker, which describes itself as a "global movement of over 800,000 spirited individuals breaking day with dance, energy, and joy," and the Civic Responsibility Project are teaming up for the events, which kick off on Thursday at 6 a.m. at the National Building Museum in Washington.
The free, nonpartisan dance parties are an effort to "help get people excited about voting and early voting this year," Ashley Spillane, Civic Responsibility Project's founder, told ITK.
"We wanted to make civic season feel a little more like the first day of school or when your favorite team makes the playoffs," Spillane said.
Additional stops on the Purple Tour include: Phoenix, Boston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Ann Arbor and Philadelphia, among others.
Spillane noted that for anyone who doesn't necessarily want to shake a leg, there will be music, food and a "fun, festive vibe."
"I don't think that voting has to feel like a horrible, obligatory process," she said. "It can actually be fun and you can be connecting with neighbors, and new friends, and meeting people while you wait in line and having a joyful experience."
