NewsNation anchor Nichole Berlie announces she's cancer-free
After going through what she describes as a hellish treatment process, NewsNation anchor Nichole Berlie is sharing some happy news: She's cancer-free.
"One year ago today, October 4 of last year, I was one of those women under the age of 50 diagnosed," Berlie said Friday on NewsNation following a segment related to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Berlie said she had no symptoms or signs in her mammogram ahead of her diagnosis: "The cancer was only detected through a recommended ultrasound because I have dense breast tissue. And another twist: I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but doctors never actually found any cancer in either breast. It was found in one lymph node in my armpit."
"What I had was a rare form of the disease," Berlie said, adding it impacts less than 1 percent of all breast cancer patients.
"Luckily, in spite of that, it was caught early. The tumor was small, and I am thrilled to report today I am cancer-free," Berlie told NewsNation viewers.
NewsNation is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns The Hill.
"Although my treatment process was hell — especially the chemotherapy, which was the hardest thing I have ever done — I am so thankful for it because it eradicated the cancer," she said.
"I only underwent chemo because I got a second opinion. My first team of doctors actually recommended a very different treatment approach, so get a second opinion if you can," Berlie said, before urging breast cancer screenings.
"Please do not put off going to the doctor," she said, thanking viewers for their messages of support.
"Today I'm cancer-free, but I am still healing mentally and emotionally," Berlie said, adding that she will face "years of medication and screenings" in her future.
"But I am here and I am thankful."
