National Guard soldier dies from noncombat injury in Iraq
A U.S. soldier has died in Iraq from noncombat injuries, according to the Defense Department.
Capt. Eric Richard Hart, 34, of Indianapolis, died Saturday, the Pentagon said.
Hart was supporting the U.S. military's operations against the designated terrorist group ISIS in Iraq. He was assigned to the 38th Infantry Division within the Indiana National Guard.
Although he died from a noncombat-related incident, the incident is under active investigation, according to the Pentagon.
The U.S. has around 2,500 troops in Iraq, though earlier this year the Pentagon announced plans to downsize that number through 2026.
Another roughly 900 troops are stationed in neighboring Syria to combat ISIS, with another roughly 1,000 in the country on a temporary basis.
The U.S. has come under frequent attack in both Iraq and Syria from Iranian-backed groups since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023.
American troops are also actively fighting against ISIS in the region.
