Murphy on fighting Trump: 'This threat is unique' but 'political gravity still exists'
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has become a very outspoken member of his party on combatting President Trump and his actions, saying that while the danger to American democracy is unprecedented, Republicans are still subject to "political gravity."
“This may look a little schizophrenic, having gone from spending two years writing big bipartisan deals on guns or on immigration to now being out front in trying to fight for the survival of democracy and using really tough language about my Republican colleagues,” Murphy said in recent interview with NBC News.
“I mean, every Democrat could just continue to run in the same director they’ve been running for the last 10 years, or you could realize that this moment is different, that this threat is unique,” he said. “To me, we don’t have another year to fight this attempt to destroy democracy.”
While the Democratic Party has reeled from its brutal election losses and attempted to figure out a way forward with the GOP controlling the House, Senate and presidency, Murphy has attempted to be active in speaking out against Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Contrary to what many may believe, he told NBC, the “traditional sort of political rules apply.”
“If we have people out on the streets protesting, if we’re overwhelming Republican town halls, if we’re lighting up the phone lines here, political gravity still exists,” the Connecticut Democrat said.
There are signs that grassroots opposition to Trump's administration may be growing, but the president on Monday dismissed recent outcry at GOP town halls, saying paid "troublemakers" were responsible.
“Paid ‘troublemakers’ are attending Republican Town Hall Meetings. It is all part of the game for the Democrats, but just like our big LANDSLIDE ELECTION, it’s not going to work for them!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
