Moskowitz on Gaetz nomination: 'Elections have consequences'
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) on Wednesday said “elections have consequences” when asked about President-elect Trump’s choice of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general.
“Donald Trump is very intentional with this pick,” Moskowitz said when asked by NewsNation about Gaetz’s possible new role, labeling the Republican representative as "fiercely loyal" and "fiercely competent."
"Donald Trump’s told the American people what he wanted to do," he added. "That was on the ballot; elections have consequences.”
On Wednesday, Trump announced that he selected Gaetz to serve as his attorney general in his upcoming administration if confirmed by the Senate.
“Matt is a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney, trained at the William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Moskowitz noted that he's worked with Gaetz in the House and the Florida state legislature, mentioning that he knows the potential attorney general "pretty well."
“Matt was a part of getting me confirmed when he was part of the transition team for Ron DeSantis, to become the emergency management director in Florida," Moskowitz continued.
Gaetz is one of the president-elect’s strongest supporters in Congress, but has critics within his own party — most notably an intense public feud with ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) who he successfully sought to oust from the speakership.
The Hill has reached out to the a spokesperson for both Trump and Gaetz for comment.
