Miller-Meeks holds GOP House seat in Iowa
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) has held on to her seat in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, Decision Desk HQ projects, inching Republicans closer to a trifecta.
The race was a rematch against Democrat Christina Bohannan, who lost out by about 7 points in the midterms. Since then, Miller-Meeks has faced criticism from conservatives in her own party, and Democrats were hopeful Iowa’s new abortion ban would help drive blue turnout against her.
The Cook Political Report shifted the race just last month into “toss-up” territory, while DDHQ’s forecast kept the seat as likely Republican in the run-up to Election Day.
Miller-Meeks notably won her first House election by just six votes back in 2020.
With votes still being counted two days after Election Day, the House majority has yet to be called, but Republicans — already winners of the White House and Senate — are considered to be in better position than Democrats to come out on top.
Iowa received a flurry of attention in the final days of the campaign, after J. Ann Selzer's polling of the state showed Vice President Harris leading former President Trump by 3 points, signaling potential Democratic inroads in what had been considered a safe red state.
But Tuesday proved Selzer's poll was an outlier — Trump won the Hawkeye State by 13 points, the largest margin of any of his three presidential runs, and cruised to the presidency, winning both the Electoral College and, for the first time, the popular vote.
