Mia Love, first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, dies at 49

Former Rep. Mia Love (Utah), the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, has died at 49.
“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” her family said in a post Sunday on X. “She was in her home and surrounded by family.”
Love had undergone treatment for brain cancer and was part of an immunotherapy clinical trial at Duke University’s brain tumor center.
Her daughter, Abiagle, shared earlier this month that her mother was no longer responding to the treatment and cancer was progressing. They then shifted focus from treatment to enjoying their remaining time together.
“We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences,” Love’s family said. “We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.”
Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022 and at the time was given up to 15 months to live.
The daughter of Haitian immigrants, she was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and served for two terms.
In 2016, Love became one of the few Republicans to say she would not support then-candidate Donald Trump.
She narrowly lost her seat in 2018 to Salt Lake City Mayor Ben McAdams (D) and then joined CNN as a commentator.
Trump took credit for her loss and Love eventually supported his 2024 campaign.
