McCaul says Pelosi 'lost her footing' then fell down marble staircase
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) "lost her footing" on a marble staircase and fell while on a congressional trip in Luxembourg.
McCaul on Tuesday spoke with reporters on Capitol Hill, where he was asked about Pelosi’s condition after she received a hip replacement abroad.
“She’s doing well," McCaul said.
“She likes to wear high heels, very high,” he continued. “She was on one of her last steps on this marble staircase that didn’t have a railing, and she lost her footing and fell to the ground.”
Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi, said Saturday that the California Democrat underwent a successful hip replacement and is “on the mend.”
Pelosi said she was thankful for the staff at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and the medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg.
McCaul, one of the lawmakers on the trip with Pelosi, and said he helped Pelosi up after her fall.
A photo of the lawmakers circulated online, where Pelosi is gripping McCaul’s hand tightly. He said Tuesday that they snapped the picture after he picked her up from the fall.
Shortly after the photo was taken, Pelosi was transported to the hospital, he said.
“I wish her a speedy recovery,” McCaul said, later adding “She’s 84, but when I talked to her on the phone, she had a lot of energy, very spunky.”
The Texas Republican noted that Pelosi was eager to get out of the hospital and on a flight back to the United States.
“Overall, she’s in good spirits and there’s no more health danger to her other than a hip replacement,” he said.
Pelosi’s office said she was enjoying seeing the outpouring of sympathy and support in recent days.
"Speaker Pelosi is well on the mend and continues to work," Krager said in a statement Tuesday.
