Massachusetts governor: State police would not assist in mass deportations
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) said her state’s law enforcement will not assist in mass deportations if President-elect Trump follows though with such a plan.
“No, absolutely not,” Healey told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Wednesday when she was asked whether Massachusetts would assist if the Trump administration asked.
“But let me say this, I do think it’s important that we all recognize that there’s going to be a lot of pressure on states and state officials, and I can assure you, we’re going to work really hard to deliver.”
Much of Trump’s agenda over the last eight years has been centered on immigration. He’s promised that on day one of his second term, he will launch “the largest deportation program in American history.”
Healey said there is likely to be litigation against Trump's plan.
“I think that the key here is that every tool in the toolbox is going to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and protect our states, and certainly to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle,” she said.
