Los Angeles DA to review new evidence in Menendez brothers case
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said Thursday at a press conference that his office would review what he said was new evidence that the Menendez brothers were allegedly molested.
"We have not decided on the outcome. We are reviewing the information. But I think it's also important that we recognize that both men and women can be the victims of sexual assault," Gascón said during the press conference.
Lyle and Erik Menendez in 1996 were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the deaths of their parents.
During the press conference, Gascón claimed that his office received a letter from one of the brothers to another family member outlining that he is the victim of molestation.
Gascón also said that his office received evidence from the defense that "one of the members of the Menudo band alleged that he was molested by the father."
Menudo is a popular Latin boy band active in the 1980s and 1990s.
"None of this information has been confirmed, we are not at this point ready to say that we either believe or do not believe that information. What we are here to tell you is that we have a moral and an ethical obligation to review what is being presented to us," Gascón said.
He added that there could be a determination made on whether they should be resentenced or whether their "behavior is appropriate if there was evidence that was not presented to the court at that time and had that evidence been presented perhaps a jury would have come to a different conclusion."
Gascón added that his office is not saying there was anything wrong with the original trial.
"We have not conceded one way or the other. We are not saying that there was anything wrong with the original trial," he said.
The Hill has contacted Gascón's office for comment.
A Netflix series called "Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story" has been popular on the streaming service in recent weeks.
Gascón said the case had been under review for a year and Thursday's news was not related to the Netflix show.
