Local New York legislator jumping into race 'to flip' Lawler's seat in Congress

A local New York legislator said Tuesday she is jumping into the race for Rep. Mike Lawler’s (R-N.Y.) seat in an attempt “to flip” it.
“I’m a County Legislator, former school board VP, and working mom with a proven record of delivering bipartisan wins for the Hudson Valley,” Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson (D) said in a Thursday post on the social platform X.
“Today, I’m announcing that I’m running to flip NY-17 blue, RT & follow my page to stay up to date with my campaign!” Davidson added.
Davidson’s post also featured a screenshot of an article from The New York Times on the local lawmaker's ambition to hold the seat representing New York’s 17th Congressional District.
In November, Lawler fended off a challenge for his seat from former Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.), which was a setback for Democrats who wished to regain the district.
The New York Republican touted the performance of his party in last year’s election only a few days after Election Day.
“You can look at a district like mine, where Joe Biden won by 10 points four years ago, and when all ballots are counted, Donald Trump very likely will win my district, or come just short, which is significant movement across the country,” Lawler told NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt at the time.
“So, let me get this straight: Beth Davidson supports NY’s Sanctuary State policies, opposes cutting government waste, and can’t summon the courage to criticize radicals in her party who called for ‘defunding the police’. In other words, she’s Kathy Hochul 2.0 with a dash of AOC. Congressman Lawler wins because Hudson Valley residents see through cookie cutter talking points and baseless attacks by politicians like Beth Davison,” a Lawler campaign spokesperson, Chris Russell, said in an emailed statement to The Hill.
