Liz Cheney: 'Women are going to save the day in this election'
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Monday she believes women will “save the day” in the election and defended telling women to “vote your conscience” regardless of their husbands’ voter preferences.
Cheney said in an interview on ABC’s “The View” that "women are going to save the day" on Tuesday, and she defended her comments from a campaign appearance late last month when she told women, "You can vote your conscience and never have to say a word to anybody.”
The issue has been in the spotlight recently following the release of an ad narrated by actor Julia Roberts that encourages women to vote for Vice President Harris, even if their husbands are voting for former President Trump. Conservatives have broadly criticized the campaign ad.
“Every time you see people like Charlie Kirk or Donald Trump, those people come out and act as though they're somehow horrified that a woman might make her own decision about how she's going to vote,” Cheney said Monday. “I mean this stuff, it's like, are we really in 2024?”
“They have actually, you know, talked about repealing the 19th Amendment, some of those people working for Donald Trump,” Cheney added. “People need to really, really remember the misogynist aspect of all of this.”
Cheney, long a Trump critic, has been campaigning with Harris in recent weeks as the pair seek to appeal to Republican women in a race that has seen a significant gender gap among voters, with Harris leading among women and Trump leading among men.
Democrats have seized on some comments from the former president in recent days, including when he said at a rally that he would be women’s protector and that “I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not. I’m going to protect them.”
Asked about those remarks in the Monday interview, Cheney did not address Trump's comments directly, instead saying, “I have a better idea. Let's, let's defeat Donald Trump tomorrow, whether he likes it or not.”
Cheney also argued in the interview that GOP women who are anti-abortion don’t “have to put those convictions aside” to support Harris.
Cheney, who identifies as “pro-life,” called some of the abortion restrictions passed around the country “so Draconian that women are not even able to get fundamental, basic health care.”
“I think all of us have to acknowledge and recognize that that being pro-life does not mean that you support the absolutely Draconian restrictions that have been put in place,” she said.
“I know that Vice President Harris will protect women's health care," she added.
Cheney said she doesn't think Trump has proven to be reliably anti-abortion, at times embracing a more moderate position on the issue.
"It's important for people to realize you cannot count on Donald Trump. So people are thinking that they're going to vote for him because they believe that somehow he is pro-life. Donald Trump is for Donald Trump. He will do whatever he needs to do. So I think that that decision, for me, is a clear one.”
