Live updates: Trump touts 'unrelenting action' in speech; mayors grilled on 'sanctuary cities'

President Trump celebrated early action during his second term in a record-length speech to Congress on Tuesday night, drawing rounds of applause from Republicans and continual protests from Democrats.
Hitting everything from Elon Musk's efforts to trim the size of government to immigration to the tariffs that had gone into effect earlier in the day, Trump both congratulated the work done so far and laid out his next steps.
The tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China roiled the markets, but they may prove short-lived: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested a deal to end them may be announced as soon as Wednesday.
The House Oversight panel on Wednesday grilled mayors from major cities on "sanctuary city" policies amid the Trump administration's hard-line immigration stance. Embattled New York Mayor Eric Adams is among those called as a witness.
With nine days to avert a government shutdown, the attention of the White House and Congress now turns more pointedly to finding a funding deal. Both Trump and adviser Elon Musk are expected to meet with Republicans on Wednesday.
Follow along today for updates from the White House, Congress and more.
