Live updates: Trump to address Congress as Canada, Mexico lash out over tariffs

President Trump will address Congress Tuesday night against the backdrop of newly levied tariffs on the nation's closest trading partners, Canada and Mexico.
The leaders of both nations had sharp words as the tariffs went into effect, with Canadian Prime Miniser Justin Trudeau calling the action "dumb" and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum saying she'd announce her country's response on Sunday.
Trump is expected to defend his recent actions and lay out his vision for the country. Here are five things to watch for in the speech, which starts at 9 p.m. EST.
The president, whose job approval hovers just below 50 percent, argues the U.S. will collect billions of dollars in new revenue because of the tariffs. That appraisal was not widely shared Monday when financial markets took a swan dive after Trump affirmed the tariffs are no longer negotiable.
Meanwhile, it is just 10 days before a potential government shutdown, as lawmakers scramble to come up with a deal to keep the lights on.
At the same time, GOP senators are urging Trump to salvage things with Ukraine's president, after Friday's fireworks.
