Live updates: Trump rejects CR as Johnson considers backup spending plan; NDAA clears Senate
President-elect Trump rejected the bipartisan spending deal that was drawing flak from an array of Republicans, with a government shutdown deadline of Friday.
The deal to keep the government funded included a congressional pay raise, disaster and agriculture aid, and kicked the funding deadline to March 14. Read what made it in the deal here.
But House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is now looking for a plan B as Republicans within and outside of Trump's orbit have slammed the spending package.
Also on Wednesday, the Senate voted to pass the $895 billion Defense authorization bill, despite a provision on transgender care that turned off some Democrats, moving it along to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) also responded to reports the House Ethics Committee may release its findings about allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use as soon as this week, defending what he says is conduct that is "embarrassing, though not criminal."
On Wednesday afternoon, the Senate advanced a bill that could mean higher Social Security benefits for some Americans if passed before Congress leaves this week.
Republicans are also butting heads after Trump called to eliminate daylight saving time.
