LGBTQ+ identification approaches 10 percent: Gallup

LGBTQ+ identification in the United States is approaching 10 percent of the adult population, a new survey finds.
The poll released Thursday by Gallup found that in 2024, 9.3 percent of American adults identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual.
That's an increase of more than a percentage point from the 2023 survey and nearly double what was found in 2020, Gallup noted.
When the polling firm first began surveying Americans about their LGBTQ+ status in 2012, it came in at just 3.5 percent.
“LGBTQ+ identification is increasing as younger generations of Americans enter adulthood and are much more likely than older generations to say they are something other than heterosexual,” Gallup wrote.
More than 1 in 5 Generation Z adults, those between the ages of 18 and 27, say they identify as LGBTQ+. Every older generation has successively lower rates.
Over the past two years, more Generation Z adults have identified as LBGTQ+, too. From 2020 to 2022, 18.8 percent identified as something other than heterosexual. That increased to 22.7 percent from 2022 to 2024.
Among the general population, 85.7 percent of respondents said they are straight. Just more than 5 percent say they were bisexual, 2 percent are gay, 1.4 percent are lesbian, and 1.3 percent are transgender. Just less than 1 percent mention another LGBTQ+ identity, such pansexual, asexual or queer, the survey found.
Gallup noted that Democrats and independents were far more likely to say they were LGBTQ+ than Republicans. More women were likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than men, and identification is higher for those living in cities or suburban areas.
The survey predicted that as the generational shifts continue, the rate of LGBTQ+ identification in America is likely going to continue to grow.
The survey was conducted in 2024 among 14,162 adults and has a margin of error of 1 percentage point.
