Lawmakers preview 119th Congress at The Hill's New Members Guide 2025 launch
The Hill hosted new and veteran Congressmembers on Wednesday in honor of their 2025 New Members Guide, with a panel discussing expectations and opportunities for bipartisanship in the 119th Congress, in which Republicans will hold a trifecta.
The event was sponsored by Samsung, Amazon, the American Petroleum Institute and CNCT, and was moderated by NewsNation’s Washington Correspondent Kellie Meyer and The Hill’s Congressional Reporter Mychael Schnell.
Following an introduction from The Hill’s Senior Vice President of Editorial Content Bill Sammon and Samsung’s Senior Director of Government Relations Kevin O’Hanlon, Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.), Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), Rep.-elect Nick Begich (R-Ark.), Rep.-elect Lateefah Simon (D-Calif.) took the stage as panelists.
Auchincloss and Hern, who served as the “veteran” members on the panel, offered their advice to the representative-elects heading into their first terms.
“I think everybody comes here with this notion you're going to change America when you get here the first day, but I would encourage you to listen a lot and to make a lot of friends,” Hern said.
Hern, who also serves as the Chair of the House Republican Policy Committee, added that he has many friends across the aisle despite being “one of the most conservative members in Congress” and said that he doesn’t “speak evil about [his competitors] in the press.”
Begich, a Republican who ousted Rep. Mary Peltola (D-Alaska), comes from a family of Democratic government representatives. He emphasized his goals of representing constituents of all parties and working towards solutions on issues like inflation.
"At the end of the day, even in the red districts, there's Democrats there too, and we need to make sure that we're representing the needs of the American people,” he said.
The panel concluded with a champagne toast to the 119th Congress.
