Lara Trump: ‘I would seriously consider' replacing Rubio in Senate if asked
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Trump, said she would “seriously consider” replacing Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) since he’s been tapped to be secretary of State.
Lara Trump joined Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo on Thursday, and she said she was honored to be considered for the position but has yet to be contacted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).
“I know my name has been thrown out there a lot, and I would say that my experience at the RNC has really shown me, you know, serving the American people,” Lara Trump said.
“And if I were tapped for this, serving my home state now, of Florida, it’s a great honor and a great responsibility, obviously, but I would love to be able to go forward and do more,” she continued.
On Wednesday, Trump chose Rubio as secretary of State, a top diplomatic role. The selection to serve in Trump’s Cabinet is a dramatic turnaround from the two being fierce rivals in the GOP presidential primary in 2016.
DeSantis will now choose the replacement, who will serve until 2026, when a special election would be held to serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
Lara Trump said she has not been contacted by DeSantis, who ran against her father-in-law in the 2024 GOP primary, but she said, “We’ll see what happens.”
She became the co-chair of the RNC in March, serving along with Michael Whatley.
