Key aides exit Mark Robinson campaign amid porn site scandal
Key aides in North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s (R) campaign “have stepped down from their roles,” according to a release from the gubernatorial candidate’s campaign.
According to the Sunday release, those who left the campaign include a campaign manager, a finance director, a deputy campaign manager and a general consultant and senior adviser. The news comes in the wake of a bombshell CNN report earlier this week on the GOP North Carolina gubernatorial candidate.
"I appreciate the efforts of these team members who have made the difficult choice to step away from the campaign, and I wish them well in their future endeavors,” Robinson said in the release. “I look forward to announcing new staff roles in the coming days.”
The CNN report unveiled a large span of inflammatory comments that Robinson reportedly made on a pornography website’s message board more than 10 years ago, like calling himself a “black NAZI.”
Robinson’s Democratic opponent in the North Carolina gubernatorial race, state Attorney General Josh Stein (D), said in a Sunday interview that candidates should be held accountable for continually backing Robinson.
“Look, Robinson exists because Donald Trump has lifted him up throughout, and candidates up and down the ballot in North Carolina need to have, they need to be held accountable for supporting Mark Robinson and being part of his entire campaign,” Stein said on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked what he makes of Robinson not being at former President Trump’s rally in the Tar Heel State a day before.
“They have been supporting him, and now it looks like folks want to run away from him, but they have lifted [him]; Mark Robinson could not exist without the support of Donald Trump,” Stein continued.
