Jon Stewart on Trump 'methods' to stay in White House: 'Think you tried one a few years ago'

Comedian Jon Stewart waded into the conversation around a possible third term for President Trump and other methods he could use to circumvent constitutional limits, saying he believes Trump has already "tried one" in the past.

Stewart, referencing Trump's recent interview with NBC News’s Kristen Welker, seemingly agreed with the president's comments about there being other avenues to a third term.

"Think you tried one a few years ago," the Daily Show host said in comments highlighted by Mediaite, perhaps referring to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

“There are other methods for staying in power beyond when you are legally allowed to be there,” he added. “Historically, some of them involve catapults."

His comments come after Trump told Welker on Sunday that he was "not joking" about running for a third term. The "Meet the Press" moderator asked him how he would do so with the current limitations.

"There are methods which you could do it, as you know," he said.

Welker continued, "Well, let me throw out one where Vice President Vance would run for office and then would, basically ... if he won, at the top of the ticket ... would then pass the baton to you."

Trump replied, “Well, that’s one. But there are others, too. There are others."

Stewart suggested Monday that maybe Trump "has something more creative" than what Welker proposed.

“Have you guys heard of the movie ‘Face/Off?’” the comedian asked.

“Yeah, so here’s how it’s going to work, Trump will watch that movie as the military seizes his power," he joked.

The veteran late-night host also invoked the president's relationship with Elon Musk when discussing the potential impact of a third Trump term on the U.S.

“So aside from the president saying, ‘I’m not leaving,’ is there any other image of the shambolic state of our democracy?" Stewart said. "Perhaps something that looks like what you might get if you fed the destruction of democracy into an AI meme generator?

"Oh right, Elon Musk. Okay," he added.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
