Jim Cramer: Trump tariff numbers 'do not make any sense'

CNBC host Jim Cramer tore into President Trump over the sweeping new tariffs his administration announced this week on nearly all foreign trading partners.

“The numbers do not make any sense," Cramer said Thursday during an appearance on CNN.

He claimed the president's economic advisors and aides on trade "really screwed up," and constructed the tariffs "in an ill-advised way."

"And I was very let down as someone who really, truly believes that free trade is awful for the American working person," Cramer continued in the comments, first highlighted by Mediaite. "This is what they came up with? Jeez, come on. Have some gumption. Have some math."

Trump on Wednesday announced a new 10 percent baseline tariff on dozens of countries around the world — and even higher taxes on others — accusing foreign nations of "ripping off" American workers and companies.

The stock market fell sharply on Thursday as a result of Trump's tariffs amid widespread concern over the impact the new policy could have on the price of consumer goods and the cost of living.

Still, the White House has argued the additional tariffs will boost manufacturing in the U.S. and lead to more jobs.
