Jennifer Lopez says Puerto Rico joke offended 'every Latino in this country'
Actress and musician Jennifer Lopez said a joke during former President Trump's Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday offended “every Latino in this country,” as she stumped for Vice President Harris in Las Vegas, Nev.
Lopez’s remarks come less than a week after comic Tony Hinchcliffe, who goes by Kill Tony, called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean,” as one of the opening acts for Trump.
Lopez told Thursday night's crowd that Trump has “consistently worked to divide us,” which she compared to Hinchcliffe's comedy.
“It wasn't just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day, okay,” Lopez said Thursday as the crowd cheered. “it was every Latino in this country. It was humanity and anyone of decent character.”
Along with his remarks about Purto Rico, the comedian also said Latinos “love making babies” during his MSG set.
“They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside. Just like they did to our country,” he added.
Hinchcliffe’s remarks during the New York City rally were widely criticized from all sides. Trump’s campaign has sought to distance itself from the comedian.
“I don’t know him; someone put him up there. I don’t know who he is,” Trump told ABC News’s Rachel Scott in an interview published Tuesday.
Lopez told the Las Vegas crowd that she would "proudly" cast her ballot for Harris this year.
“I'm a lover. I am not a fighter. I am not here to trash anyone or bring them down. I know what that can feel like, and I wouldn't do it to my worst enemy or even when facing the biggest adversary I think America has internally ever had,” Lopez said.
