James Cameron: Trump reelection 'like watching a car crash over and over'

Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron said Thursday he is "sickened" by President Trump's reelection, adding it is "like watching a car crash over and over and over."
Speaking on “The F#$%ing News” podcast, as highlighted by Variety, the "Titanic" and "Avatar" director said his New Zealand citizenship is "imminent."
Cameron, who was born in Canada and has been based in New Zealand for the past 14 years, said he would not live in the U.S. again.
“I see a turn away from everything decent,” Cameron said of the U.S. under the Trump administration.
“America doesn’t stand for anything if it doesn’t stand for what it has historically stood for. It becomes a hollow idea, and I think they’re hollowing it out as fast as they can for their own benefit," he added.
When asked if he feels safer in New Zealand, the filmmaker said he wasn't sure, but he added it was "nice" that he does not have to "see that guy's face" on the front page of newspapers.
"It’s inescapable there [in the U.S.]," he said. "It’s like watching a car crash over and over and over.”
Since Inauguration Day in January, Trump has taken a series of sweeping actions to remake the federal government in tandem with billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk. The Musk-led efforts to gut and downsize government agencies has enraged Democrats and caused growing skepticism from some Republicans who are worried about the impact on constituents.
Trump has also removed agency watchdogs, purged top military leaders and lawyers, halted diversity programs and throttled foreign aid.
Democrats, reeling from the 2024 election loss, are torn over how to best respond to the flurry of actions coming from the White House and Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. Grassroots Democrats are already starting to push for a stronger response from party leaders.
