GSA takes down list of properties it might sell

The General Services Administration (GSA) removed a list of 443 properties it was potentially looking to sell on Wednesday just a day after posting the listings.
A page featuring a previously lengthy “non-core” property list now says a list will be “coming soon.”
“We are identifying buildings and facilities that are not core to government operations, or non-core properties, for disposal. Selling ensures that taxpayer dollars are no longer spent on vacant or underutilized federal spaces,” a message on the site reads.
“Disposing of these assets helps eliminate costly maintenance and allows us to reinvest in high-quality work environments that support agency missions.”
Major real estate locations including the headquarters of the Justice Department, FBI and the U.S. Department of Agriculture were up for review on the page on Tuesday.
“GSA will consider non-core assets for divestment from government ownership in an orderly fashion to ensure taxpayers no longer pay for empty and underutilized federal office space, or the significant maintenance costs associated with long-term building ownership — potentially saving more than $430 million in annual operating costs,” GSA said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Hill has reached out to the GSA.
The listings came more than a month after President Trump issued an executive order requiring federal employees to return to in person work at their designated offices. The influx of those who previously worked from home caused major traffic delays in routes between Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
The Associated Press reported early last month that GSA managers instructed regional managers to begin terminating leases for many federal office spaces nationwide.
Beyond Washington real estate, the since-deleted document proposed shuttering of federal buildings across the country, many of which house various government functions. Many are located in large cities such as Los Angeles, Detroit and Dallas. It also proposes closing more than 10 courthouses.
