Greene promises bill renaming Gulf of Mexico ‘ASAP’
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has promised she will introduce a bill “ASAP” to back President-elect Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
In a post online, Greene shared a video of Trump pitching the idea to rename the body of water to the “Gulf of America.”
“President @realDonaldTrump’s second term if off to a GREAT start,” the Georgia Republican said. “I will be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
Earlier Tuesday, Trump told reporters he wanted to change the name of the gulf as he criticized Mexico for taking advantage of the U.S. over trade and immigration issues.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” the president-elect said. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
As Trump prepares to take office for the second time, he’s begun solidifying his economic agenda, including levying additional tariffs. Late last year, he announced there would be a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.
Trump subsequently met with exiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation Monday, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The president-elect has continually bashed Mexico and on Tuesday said it was a “very dangerous place” that was run by cartels.
The president-elect also suggested Monday that the U.S. merge with Canada after Trudeau's exit, claiming there would be “no tariffs” and they would be secure from international threats. The pitch comes weeks after he trolled the prime minister by calling him the "governor" of Canada and joking that the nation could be the 51st state.
