GOP rep expects Trump to move Space Command to Alabama in first week
Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) said he believes President-elect Trump will move the Space Command to Alabama in his first week in office.
During an interview with Mobile, Ala., radio FM Talk 106.5 that aired Monday, Rogers, who is the House Armed Services Committee chair, said he expects Trump will immediately reverse the decision made by President Biden to keep the headquarters in Colorado.
“I’ve told y’all since Biden made that crooked decision, it wasn’t going to work,” he said. “As you know, on the Armed Services Committee, I put a hold on any money being spent in Colorado Springs after President Biden came in and stole that mission away.”
In 2023, Biden overturned a decision from the Trump administration to relocate the temporary headquarters of Space Command to Alabama, Rogers’ home state. Biden opted to keep the base in Colorado Springs, saying that would maintain stability and not impact readiness.
A Biden administration official said in 2023 that moving the headquarters to Alabama would force a transition process that wouldn’t allow the base to be open until the mid-2030s.
Rogers insisted Monday that Huntsville, Ala., had won “fair and square,” and that Colorado Springs “will not be the future capital” for Space Command.
The Alabama lawmaker criticized Biden for his action, saying he “took it away for political reasons” and Trump will “reverse that decision.”
“It’s going to be a big point now because President Trump’s already announced it, and I think you’ll see in the first week that he’s in office, he’ll sign an executive order reversing Biden’s directive and we will start construction next year in Huntsville,” Rogers said.
