Geraldo Rivera backing Harris: Trump 'cannot be trusted to honor the Constitution'
Television personality Geraldo Rivera revealed Monday that he is backing Vice President Harris over former President Trump in the election, now less than a month away.
“Former President Trump is a sore loser who cannot be trusted to honor the Constitution,” Rivera, once an ally of the former president, wrote in a lengthy post on social platform X. “That is why I am voting for Kamala Harris to be our 47th President.”
The former Fox News personality said he hasn't spoken to Trump since November 13, 2020 — just days after he lost the election to President Biden.
“He was calling to get my take on the controversies surrounding the election, which appeared to have been decided by a handful of votes in several states,” Rivera added. “I asked him what he would do if the vote count remained against him. As I reported on Fox News that same morning, Friday the 13th, he told me he was a reasonable man and would do the right thing if that time came.”
He said Trump chose to do the opposite, embarking on "an increasingly menacing campaign to discredit the 2020 election.”
When Rivera did not support his decision, he ultimately distanced himself, according to the post. His comments echo similar remarks the ex-TV host made in an interview last year with The New York Times, when he said the former president made him "dump him" after tension following the 2020 election.
In his post Monday, Rivera — now a correspondent for NewsNation, which is owned by The Hill's parent company Nexstar Media Group — said while others may still support the GOP nominee, he could not.
“Maybe you are inclined to vote for the former president anyway, because he says he will cut your taxes or build the border wall or pull out of NATO or put tariffs on China,” Rivera said. “However, you justify voting for Trump, adopting his big lie about the stolen election makes you a liar."
Rivera said in 2022 that he would never support Trump again.
CNN's Chris Wallace, who previously worked at Fox News, went after his old network in a recent podcast appearance for its coverage of Trump, the 2020 election and subsequent lawsuits it has faced.
“I had no problem with conservative opinion any more than I do with liberal opinion,” Wallace said. “But what I do have a problem with is conspiracy and lies. The truth is nonnegotiable.”
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign.
